2014 - Copper Canyon - Cusarare - Bean Harvest At our lunch stop at at the Hacienda half way between Batopilas and Creel, the owners had harvested, cleaned and were weighing these beans. They mentioned the type of bean but ---- The hanging scale is a Hanson Model K842G. Ones in worse shape than this one are asking up to $150 US on eBay. HANSON SCALES: The Hanson Brothers Model number 842 is a two revolution spring scale with an 8" diameter dial with a capacity of 34, 35, 36 or 38 pounds. It could be ordered from their 1930s catalog with a choice of 6 different hanging pans. These scales sold for $4.00-4.60 depending on the chosen pan. Part of Taylor Precision Products was the Hanson Scale Company. In 1888, the Hanson Scale Company was founded in Chicago, IL, making light industrial scales. The small workshop gradually grew through the years, continuing with its “design for customers” mantra. In order to save costs plus establish a European base, Hanson set up a manufacturing plant in Ireland. The Hanson name became and still is a very key and important brand in the UK market.

Mesa Mechoqueachi is a prominent mesa located in Chihuahua, Mexico. It is situated within the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range and rises to a height of approximately 2,100 meters above sea level. The mesa is part of a larger geological formation known as the Copper Canyon system, which is a series of canyons and mesas that stretch over a vast area of northern Mexico.

2014 - Copper Canyon - Cusarare - Drying Corn On the return trip to Creel Chihuahua from Batopilas we stopped for lunch in the same Hacienda we stopped at on the way in. There was a pile of corn set out in the sun to dry and this is it. Corn is a major staple in the Tarahumara diet.

2014 - Copper Canyon - Batopilas Canyon 1 of 2 Our tour group is climbing out of the Batopilas Canyon, one of the Cooper Canyon series of six canyons, on our way back to Creel Chihuahua for the night. One last look down the lower section of the canyon and the Batopilas River. This is a similar shot to one posted on the way down but the light is much better (earlier in the day and not into the setting sun) than the previous post. If is a fish bearing river maybe term now is was.

Our tour group is climbing out of the Batopilas Canyon, one of the Cooper Canyon series of six canyons, on our way back to Creel Chihuahua for the night. One last look down the lower section of the canyon and the Batopilas River. This is a similar shot to one posted on the way down but the light is much better (earlier in the day and not into the setting sun) than the previous post. If is a fish bearing river maybe term now is was.
2014 - Copper Canyon - Batopilas - Road Closed Oops. A snag in the ride down to the bottom of the Copper Canyon and the Batopilas River bed. The road is closed. Fortunately the delay was only 25 minutes (not Mexican minutes) and we were on our way. The man on the catepilar pushed some more dirt and rocks off the hill side and then cleared a path for the waiting vehicles. Next stop will be the Pueblo Magico town of Batopilas Chihuahua.

2014 - Copper Canyon - Batopilas River The road ahead on the way to Batopilas at the bottom of the Copper Canyon in the state of Chihuahua Mexico. The road at the lower end of the trip, about 16 km worth, is being upgraded. In the meantime we will have to navigate the construction zone, down to the temporary bridge to cross the Batopilas River and then snake our way long the canyon road across the top of the photo. The upgrade will add a bridge around the corner to eliminate this switchback.

2014 - Copper Canyon - Batopilas - Holy Shit, No! This is a small section of the steep incline on a newer section of the road from the top of the Copper Canyon down to the Batopilas River bed. We are approximately at the halfway point - the decent drops 6,000 feet in 6 miles. We stopped here as the Suburban appeared to be having transmission problems. There were 5 of us in the Suburban and the other 9 in a 12 passenger van. It was decided to transfer 4 of the Suburban passengers to the van to lighten its load. When we stopped here the dominate odor was from overheated brake linings. The road above this point is as winding as what's below. In many places the road was only one lane due to rock slides. The terrain the road is built on has a lot of unstable aggregate. A couple of years ago we experienced the road between Mendoza Argentina across the Andes to Santiago Chile. It was an interesting road too but nothing as awe inspiring as this ride.

Note the coal oil lamps ready for night use. Must have to bring your own globe and probably TP. Marsha would be aghast!

The tour guide arranged for sandwiches, fresh fruit and veggies at the hotel prior to leaving Creel in the morning. Nice touch, good food, linen service, wine glasses but no wine. Whine!!
