Aboadela is a small village located in the municipality of Amarante, in the district of Porto, Portugal. Situated in the northern region of the country, Aboadela is surrounded by picturesque landscapes and is known for its tranquility and rural charm.

The village is set amidst rolling hills and lush green fields, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The nearby Tâmega River adds to the scenic beauty of the area, providing opportunities for fishing and boating.

Historically, Aboadela has been significant due to its strategic location along the ancient Roman road, connecting the cities of Braga and Chaves. The remnants of this historical route can still be seen in the village, with Roman milestones serving as a reminder of its past.

Aboadela is also home to the notable Aboadela Monastery, a 12th-century religious complex that showcases Romanesque architecture. The monastery, although partially in ruins, still retains its architectural grandeur and attracts visitors interested in historical and cultural heritage.

The village offers a peaceful and authentic Portuguese experience, with traditional stone houses, charming narrow streets, and a welcoming community. Local amenities include a few small shops, cafes, and restaurants, where visitors can taste the regional cuisine and savor local specialties.

Never On Sunday Saw this young woman at the cathedral on top of the hill, and then again here in the commercial plaza at the bottom. Just standing, in both places, late morning on a Thursday, where groups of mostly elderly tourists could see her. Took a discrete photo each time. She didn’t notice, or at least didn’t respond.
Yes, I wondered.
No, I didn’t ask.
Not worth posting, really, but I like to alternate images with portrait and landscape orientation.

Stairway to Heaven Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, where a spring at the top of the hill was reported to be a source of miracle cures.
Yes, I need a miracle cure.
No, I took a bus to the top, and then down here.
Yes, I did visit the fountain.
No, I don’t believe in miracles.
Yes, of course I drank from the fountain.

Songs of Time Traveled Is all photography time travel?
Sunshine on the Water; ripples in the Douro River you can’t touch twice; a passing Summer Breeze; shadows of living trees; a working backhoe; modern housing with rural electrification among old vineyards on Country Roads; a old railroad bridge with Roman arches; Old Time Religion; ancient hills; the eternities of Gaia* and the grave.

Ain’t Nobody Home With apologies to BB King, who meant something else entirely. Portugal seems to be recovering from many decades of authoritarian rule, but my sample is sparse and there is a long way to go. Meanwhile the tree seems to be doing fine.
