Spain's Drain is a canal located in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. It is a man-made waterway that serves the purpose of drainage and flood control in the area. The canal stretches for approximately 4 kilometers, running in a north-south direction through the neighborhoods of Avondale and New Lynn.

The construction of Spain's Drain took place in the early 1960s as a response to the frequent flooding that occurred in the region. The canal was named after a nearby street called "Spain Avenue." The primary function of the canal is to collect and divert stormwater from the surrounding urban areas, preventing flooding during heavy rainfall periods.

Spain's Drain is characterized by its concrete lining, which helps to channel the water efficiently. The canal is relatively narrow, with an average width of around 5 meters, and it is designed to handle a significant volume of water flow. The sides of the canal are sloped, allowing easy access for maintenance and cleaning purposes.

The canal is surrounded by residential areas, and its presence has contributed to the overall improvement of the local environment. The canal not only prevents flooding but also acts as a habitat for various aquatic plants and animals. Additionally, the surrounding green spaces along the canal provide recreational opportunities for local residents, such as walking, jogging, and cycling.

Overall, Spain's Drain plays a crucial role in managing stormwater and mitigating flood risks in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand.

Gumdigger's Soap Kumarahou
Pomaderris Kumeraho
Golden Tainui

This small tree is endemic to the northern half of the north island of New Zealand and has abundant yellow flowers in early spring. It prefers a dry shady spot and can be grown in containers outdoors. It can reach heights of 3 - 4 [meters].

Gum diggers rubbed the flowers between damp hands producing a frothy cleanser which is where this plant derives its common name, Gumdigger's Soap.

The Maori used Kumarahou for its medicinal properties, as a tea for digestive, bronchial, and chest complaints, and to purify the blood. Applied externally, Golden Tainui can heal damaged skin and relieve the symptoms of rheumatism.

Fallen Ancient Kauri Humankind discovered his ancient Kauri in 2011, and other than a non-toxic water-based timber preservative, they left it untouched. Scientists are trying to determine if a volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ocean toppled the tree based on how it fell 120,000 years ago and the charred timber on the surface. This Kauri tree would have lived for around 1,000 years.

Why is the trunk flat? After the tree toppled, it sank into the earth, where it remained buried for over 100,000 years. Only the buried part remained preserved in the peat. The elements rotted away the section of the tree that was exposed.
