Sinaw, Bedouin woman with mobile phone Sinaw, Bedouin woman with mobile phone

The Bedouin are nomadic Arab Tribes who have historically inhabited the desert regions in the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, and North Africa. The Arabian Peninsula is the historic and original homeland of the Bedouin Arabs. The English word bedouin comes from the Arabic badawī, which means "desert dweller", and is traditionally contrasted with ḥāḍir, the term for sedentary people. Bedouin territory stretches from the vast deserts of North Africa to the rocky sands of the Middle East. They are traditionally divided into tribes, or clans, and historically share a common culture of herding camels and goats. The vast majority of Bedouin adhere to Islam, although there are some fewer numbers of Arab Christian Bedouins present in the Fertile Crescent.

While many Bedouins have abandoned their nomadic and tribal traditions for a modern urban lifestyle, many retain traditional Bedouin culture such as retaining the traditional clan structure, traditional music, poetry, dances, and many other cultural practices and concepts. Urbanized Bedouins often organise cultural festivals, usually held several times a year, in which they gather with other Bedouins to partake in and learn about various Bedouin traditions—from poetry recitation and traditional sword dances to playing traditional instruments and even classes teaching traditional tent knitting. Traditions like camel riding and camping in the deserts are still popular leisure activities for urban Bedouins who live in close proximity to deserts or other wilderness areas.

Kuwait City at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 08/09/12) A nighttime view of Kuwait City is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 32 crew member on the International Space Station. Seen at night Kuwait City, the capital of the small Persian Gulf state of Kuwait, contrasts dramatically with the dark surface of the Persian Gulf (top) and the very sparsely populated desert area (bottom). Night views also show at a glance some aspects of urban geography that are difficult to perceive in daylight images. Here the focus of radial traffic arteries and "ring roads" guide the eye to the financial center of the city—on the cape extending into Kuwait Bay north of the First Ring Road. The numbering of the ring roads shows the progressive southward development of the city, towards the Seventh Ring Road which still lies outside the built-up area at lower right. The striking differences in color of city lighting also provide information on the urban geography. Areas with lighting of a green tinge are, in each case, newer residential districts. The town of Al Ahmadi (lower right), known for its verdant vegetation, was built in 1946 when oil was struck and stands out with its characteristic blue night lights. Kuwait International Airport, like most major airports around the globe, is particularly bright due to the high concentration of lights.

Es Safa Volcanic Field, Syria (NASA, International Space Station Science, 09/04/10) Es Safa Volcanic Field, Syria is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 24 crew member on the International Space Station. This photograph highlights a part of the striking landscape of the Es Safa Volcanic Field located to the southeast of Damascus, Syria. The basaltic volcanic field is part of the larger Harrat Ash Shamah-the largest volcanic field on the Arabian tectonic plate. Harrat Ash Shamah parallels the Red Sea and extends from northeastern Israel, through southern Syria and Jordan, and into Saudi Arabia covering an area of over 50,000 square kilometers. According to scientists, the Es Safa Volcanic Field contains numerous vents active during the Holocene Epoch (beginning approximately 12,000 years ago). The most recent recorded activity was a boiling lava lake observed in the area around 1850. The dark lava flow field at center likely represents the latest activity of the Es Safa Volcanic Field, and is emplaced over older, lighter colored flows. The older flow surfaces also have light tan sediment accumulating in shallow depressions, in contrast to the relatively pristine surfaces of the darker, younger flows. Cinder cones are scattered throughout the Es Safa field, but many cones are aligned along northwest-southeast trends that likely indicate faults through which magma rose to the surface -- two such cinder cone alignments are visible at left. To the southeast (right) a small reservoir is visible that feeds water distribution ditches extending northwards.
